It hardly passed anyone’s attention at the tournament that the international organization of the Icelandic horse FEIF nominates the year 2012 for exemplary equitation. Among the things that FEIF has encouraged is that riders are rewarded for beautiful equitation at tournaments.
Therefore a judge in the sports events, according to the FEIF competition rules today, lower scores down 2,0 points and raise score of 0,5 for equitation. Judges are asked to explain in a clear manner when the use this aspect of the judicial scale. Two new cards have been taken to be used to indicate this; one with a plus and the other with a minus sign.
Tölt is the only competition event which would be categorized as a sports event at Landsmót. Therefore, last night the judges had permission to use plus and minus cards in order to reward or reprimand for equitation. Sigurður Sæmundsson who was the announcer last night is the Icelandic representative in the FEIF sports committee which had the incentive for this new direction. At the beginning of the preliminary competition, he reminded the audience of the new system. On the other hand the cards were never used.
At an interview with the sports judges this morning, they said that this usage of the cards was very difficult. Yesterday the competitors had shown great equitation but they had seen a reason to reward the riders.
The tölt finals are ahead and it will be fun to see whether the new cards will then be used, for the spectators to realize what kind of equitation the judges consider is exemplary.
